(Studio)
An independent studio, built around people.

Solidspace is an architecture, planning and interiors studio of 140 people. We are partner-owned, we keep our teams small, and the people who design a building stay with it until it is finished.

(Principles)
Four principles,
held to.
(01-04)
Clarity before form
Every building has one organizing idea, readable in the plan and the facade. If we cannot draw it on a single page, we keep working.
(02-04)
Honest materials
Timber, concrete, brick and steel, specified for how they age and detailed to show how they are made.
(03-04)
Carbon is a design input
We measure embodied carbon from the first sketch and report it on every project, so reuse is weighed before demolition.
(04-04)
We stay through site
The architects who draw the details visit weekly until handover, and return a year later to see how the building is used.
(Our story)
Twenty years,
one practice.
2006
Founded in Brooklyn
Six partners leave larger firms to start Solidspace above a framing shop, with one commission and one shared drafting table.
2010
First civic building
A public school in Portland becomes our first civic commission and sets our approach to daylight.
2014
Chicago opens
A second office follows our first transit commission and grows into the studio's center for civic work.
2018
Los Angeles and interiors
A third office opens, and interiors joins architecture and planning under one roof.
2026
140 people, net zero by 2030
We publish our first embodied carbon report and commit every new project to a net-zero pathway.
(Leadership)
Four partners,
every project.
(Leadership)
(Life in the studio)
Made in
the open.
